Sport becomes predictable with experience. For example, yesterday a player attempted a "downball" (feet on the ground) hit with the ball below the top of the net. It wasn't a "rollshot" just a straight overhand hit. The geometry dictated the ball would go into the net. It did. That cannot happen.
"Get me over hits" should do just that and the defense resets. You can't hit them long, wide, or into the net.
Later in the match, the Marblehead server was attacking a back row defender. Ultimately, teammates have to read and "cheat" to help. Marlboro beat Melrose in the State semis in 2003, essentially with five players as their libero handled almost everything in the back.
Scrimmages 'teach' and players must love the lessons. Of course, during the season, the lineups are more experienced and less vulnerable to gamesmanship.
