Stay Open to the World and Acquire New Skills

Luka's advice to Marcus has universal appeal. Openness imparts curiosity. How can we do this better? How can we work together at a high level? Adolescence helps you to learn new skills and define your philosophy.

A Red Sox employee told me a story about a former player (he will remain unnamed) who got a big contract and said, "it doesn't matter now. I got paid." As a fan I'm offended. As a professional, I'm disgusted.

Be a fan of Penn professor and author Adam Grant (Give and Take, Think Again, and others). Grant inspires his students and his readers.

Learn 'untaught' skills.
  • Hard work is a skill.
  • Toughness is a skill.
  • Resilience is a skill.
  • Gratitude is a skill.
  • Being happy for another's success is a skill.
  • TEAMWORK is a skill.
Part of your volleyball process is reading a book. Literature teaches the value of intangibles.

Your choices impact your teammates. Don't study and you risk loss of eligibility. Don't get enough sleep, underperform. Violate the ML12 chemical health policy, four game suspension.

I've often shared the story of a girls' basketball team (not Melrose) that was favored to go far in the playoffs. Before their first game, one girl "stole" the boyfriend of a teammate. The team 'metaphorically' fractured and lost their opening round game.

TEAMWORK makes you stronger. Selfishness destroys. You cannot hide who you are on the court. How you play reflects how you live.
