"Hope Is not a Plan" Plus Libero Highlights

Be intentional. Develop skill, tactics, physicality, and resilience. Learn from experts. Success is a choice

Coach Jiri Popelka's weekly letter says, don't rely on hope. Here are some excerpts:

Former world champion coach Vital Heynen "talked about one team playing "hope volleyball.". Vital explained it as an action where you think you might succeed, but the chances are small

Imagine you're attacking against a triple block and you try to hit hard in the middle of the block 5 centimeters above the net. You hope that your attack can succeed. Or you play a easy high float serve to your opponent and hope they will not receive it well.

You're not sure if your action has a chance of success. Instead, you hope it might succeed.

Don't play volleyball on chance or hope. We practice, we work hard to do our best.

You try everything a thousand times in practice. And then if a match comes and someone starts playing hope volleyball. Volleyball that hasn't been practiced or tried and tested. Volleyball actions without thinking, I don't see that as a good strategy

We play the way we practice. If I've never hit a jump serve in practice in my life, I'm not going to come into a match looking to hit a huge jump serve.

If I know my opponent's libero is always running behind the block, I'm not going to tip there.

That's why I advise you not to play hope volleyball. Play bold, take risks, try to outsmart your opponent. In a match, don't play on chance, don't play with a "hope" strategy."
