The Right Bus

Former Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski finishes his MasterClass on Values-Driven Leadership with a story.

As a 14 year-old in Chicago headed off to high school, he heard his mother say, "Make sure you get on the right bus." He explained that he knew the city and the busses. His mother said, "that's not what I'm talking about."

She meant the metaphorical right bus, with the right driver and the right passengers. Some say we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. Maybe it's the average of the five people whom we hold in high regard.

All of us make mistakes in what we say and in what we think.

As you write your metaphorical story, ask yourselves how you can improve as a person, student, athlete, or friend. Some things need saying and others need to be withheld. Wisdom is knowing the difference.
