The Boston Globe shares a volleyball column today about, ahem, the Cape Ann League. They include Ipswich, Newburyport, and Lynnfield in their top 15. Westborough remains mysteriously absent. Undefeated Westborough gets a chance to prove they're the top team in the state facing Barnstable today.
It's hard to rank teams across leagues and there's only so many nonleague games.
Newburyport is first in the Division 3 MIAA power rankings.
Ipswich and Lynnfield are in the top 4 in the MIAA Division four power rankings. Yesterday, Ipswich defeated Wilmington, one of the weakest teams in the Middlesex League, 3-1.
And Melrose travels to Frontier (10-0) Saturday with Frontier the top-ranked team in Division 5.
The only results that matter ultimately occur during the postseason statewide tournament. And everything written, including here, is only noise.
Melrose Notes: Melrose travels to Stoneham today with a chance to resume winning ways. The nonleague schedule is one of the toughest in years and Melrose is 0-3 outside of the Middlesex League.
Melrose looks to play more aggressive offensively to increase the number of kills/set and to improve blocking the outside big guns to relieve pressure on the back row.
Teams build legacies with signature wins and today's tuneup at Stoneham is an important step in that direction. San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich says if it takes 100 hits to break the rock, you have to keep pounding. "You can't skip steps." Pound the rock.
