Melrose (8-2) rebounded from two-game dry spell with a 25-21, 25-22, 25-22 straight set win over the Belmont Marauders.
Coach Scott Celli continues to tinker with lineups, today rotating setters Kiki Kiernan and Autumn Whelan. Sam Dewey had good production at opposite, blocking, contributing a few kills, and an assist. Claire Albuja also had some good moments up front with aggressive offense.
Erin Torpey had an excellent game at outside attack and played solid defense, in one of her best performances of the season.
Overall Melrose played more consistently defensively, especially in the back row, with excellent work from Nicole Abbott and Mary Kate Mahoney in particular.
The first set saw Emily Hudson lead in the middle with an unofficial five kills as Melrose was solid for most of the set.
Melrose raced out to an 18-10 lead in the second set before allowing the Marauders to deliver a broadside and tie the set at 18. But Melrose fought back with especially good play from Erin down the stretch for the three point win.
Belmont counterattacked in the third set, jumping out to an 8-1 lead, but Melrose rampaged back to tie the set at eight. There was a lot of back and forth action with Melrose using its size advantage and wins from Emma Randolph and Emily to control the net at the end.
Lady Raider Notes: Alyssa Abbott, older sister of Nicole, was on hand. Alyssa had a 'designated server' role on the 2012 State Championship team.
Up next, at Reading on Thursday.
