Maxpreps.com has a Player of the Week feature for each team. This week coach Celli named Rachel Johnson.
Rachel has played good volleyball for Melrose for a couple of years...including this highlight first pass. Coach Celli identified her as a key defensive cog as a freshman and she has steadily improved offensively as well.
Rachel is second on the team in kills and averages just over two per game, although her biggest presence is as a front row blocker. Per my review she stands at 32 in the Maxpreps.com rankings of total kills which is not far from highly rated players such as Andover's Sarah Arvidson and Case's Jenn Cabral, the latter an All-State player last season.
Like many of the Melrose girls volleyball and basketball players, she has also appeared regularly on the high school honor roll.
You can find team statistics here. And there's a growing respect factor, too.
Congratulations to Rachel, her family, and the bigger Melrose volleyball community.
